This story is about what would have happened if Squirrelflight had chosen Ashfur over Brambleclaw. My second story, hope everyone likes it! The allegiances are the same as in Twilight, in case you're wondering. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CHAPTER 1 Squirrelflight padded slowly over to Ashfur, sitting down beside him. She drew her pink tongue gently over his ear, purring loudly. "Wanna go hunting?" she asked. Ashfur nodded, his pale gray tail flicking happily. The two walked out of the camp, their pelts brushing. Brambleclaw looked on, his amber eyes gleaming with pain and jealousy. Squirrelflight ignored the tom's gaze and bounded out into the forest. "Ah, fresh air," she sighed. Ashfur nodded, scanning the ground for prey. Squirrelflight scented squirrel and looked around, trying to pinpoint the creature's location. She finally found it scuffling through the dead leaves. Lashing her ginger tail, Squirrelflight leaped and caught the squirrel easily between her outstretched paws. "Not bad," Ashfur purred, padding up behind her. The she-cat flicked her tail and searched for a place to bury the prey. After the squirrel was safe under the roots of a maple tree, the two warriors continued their hunt. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bluestar peered down at the young cats, shaking her head. "This is not going as planned," she muttered. A brown tom gave her shoulder a quick lick. "Relax," he mewed. "Everything will turn out all right. The three can still come, even to a cat with a different mate." Bluestar turned on the tom, her fur standing straight up. "No, Oakheart!" the she-cat snapped. "Don't you see? This is not how StarClan planned this! The Clans will be doomed if the prophecy is not fulfilled!" Bluestar spun around and walked pointedly away. Oakheart gazed after her sadly. "I only pray that you are wrong, dear Bluestar," he murmured, gazing out at the cats once more. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Short, I know. But I will post more soon.

CHAPTER 2 Brambleclaw sat hidden in a clump of bushes in the ThunderClan camp. Squirrelflight and Ashfur padded happily into camp, their tails twined and their jaws full of prey. He felt a pang of jealousy toward Ashfur. Even after he had killed Hawkfrost, proving his loyalty to his Clan over his kin, Squirrelflight still had stronger feelings for the gray tom. "Hi Brambleclaw," Whitepaw whispered. "Whatcha doing?" Brambleclaw was startled by the apprentice. "Er... nothing important," he replied quickly. Whitepaw gazed at him, her eyes shining in admiration. "Okay then," the she-cat mewed, slipping back out into camp. Brambleclaw stared after her. What did Whitepaw see in him? The tabby tom shook his head. Squirrelflight had settled down across camp, sitting beside Ashfur. The two were sharing a plump starling, and Brambleclaw felt a pang of misery. He and Squirrelflight had done the same multiple times on their journey to the sun-drown place. Something had been lost between them, and Brambleclaw feared it would never be restored. The tom slipped through the bushes, to ward the tunnel leading to the cats' dirt place. He exited through the tunnel, trying to act casual. Brambleclaw padded naturally across camp and into the warriors' den. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Squirrelflight sat contentedly beside Ashfur. Her ginger fur merged with his pale gray fur, and you could barely tell where one cat ended and the other began. "Oh Ashfur," the she-cat purred. "I don't know how I ever lived without you." She gave the tom's shoulder a lick and pressed herself closer to him. Ashfur gazed at Squirrelflight affectionately. "I've always loved you," the tom whispered, his blue eyes shining. "And I always will." The two warriors sat there for what seemed an eternity, purring and looking to the darkening sky. "I should go to sleep," Squirrelflight yawned. "I've got dawn patrol tomorrow." She headed toward the warriors' den, wishing Ashfur's nest wasn't so far from hers. "Squirrelflight! Wait!" Ashfur called, racing to catch up with her. "Will you sleep with me in my nest tonight?" Squirrelflight nodded happily, her green eyes glowing in the pale moonlight. Ashfur purred, pushing his way into the den. They settled down together, quickly slipping into a sound sleep. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bluestar paced restlessly. Spottedleaf padded up to her, followed by multiple other StarClan cats. "Bluestar," Spottedleaf mewed. "You mustn't let this worry you so much. We can send the three in the prophecy, even if it isn't to the exact same cats." Bluestar glared at the she-cat. "Yes," she growled. "It does matter. The prophecy will be ruined if the correct cats are not involved. Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight have intertwined destinies, whether they like it or not." With this, Bluestar sat down and looked away pointedly. "I will no longer talk about this subject," she hissed. Spottedleaf dipped her head and backed away. "Of course," she murmured, a worried look in her eyes. Spottedleaf sat down once she was away from Bluestar. "If Squirrelflight is happy, her father is happy. And as long as Firestar is happy, I am happy," she murmured gazing at her paws. "Oh Firestar," the she-cat whispered. "If only things had been different." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hope everyone likes this so far... Things will get more exciting soon. I promise.

CHAPTER 3 Squirrelflight raced up to Ashfur excitedly. "Ashfur!" she exclaimed, unable to hold it in any longer. "Leafpool said I'm expecting kits!" Ashfur gasped in surprise. "That's wonderful!" he purred. The tom cherished the thought that he and Squirrelflight were having their first kits. He looked over at his beautiful mate. Her green eyes were luminous in the dawn light and her ginger pelt shone. "I can barely wait," he murmured, licking her shoulder. "I would like to name one of them Brindlekit," Squirrelflight went on. "After your mother." Ashfur was moved by the she-cat's thoughtfulness. His chest felt like it was going to burst with affection for the ginger warrior. "That means you'll have to move to the nursery soon," Ashfur sighed. He knew he would miss the warmth of Squirrelflight beside him at night. "Oh Ashfur," Squirrelflight mewed playfully. "I will only be across camp. It's not like I'm moving in with ShadowClan." She flicked his ear with the tip of her tail. "Let's hunt at least one last time!" the she-cat called, racing toward the entrance. Ashfur nodded and bounded after her. Brambleclaw stepped out in front of him, blocking the way with his massive shoulders. "We're supposed to be on border patrol," the tabby tom mewed gruffly. Ashfur gazed at Squirrelflight longingly. She was waiting in the entrance expectantly, a puzzled look on her face. "Alright," Ashfur groaned. He walked half-heartedly behind Brambleclaw, shooting an apologetic glance at Squirrelflight. His mate looked miserable, watching him walk away from her. We'll be together again soon, he thought. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Squirrelflight watched Ashfur's pale gray tail disappear into the forest, her heart heavy. Why did Brambleclaw have to pick now of all times to send Ashfur on patrol? The ginger she-cat shook her head sadly, padding toward the fresh kill pile. She absentmindedly picked up a squirrel and sat down to eat. Squirrelflight felt full after only a few bites and went to take a nap. Sleep overcame her almost as soon as she set down her head. The ginger warrior not only slept, but she dreamed. Squirrelflight found herself in a strange forest unlike any she had ever seen before. Only when Spottedleaf stepped out of the shadows did she realize she was in StarClan's hunting grounds. "Dearest Squirrelflight," the tortoiseshell she-cat sighed. "I fear for you, and your unborn kits." Squirrelflight stared at Spottedleaf. "W-What do you mean?" she stuttered. Spottedleaf gazed at her sympathetically. "A prophecy was made long ago," she mewed. "But events have happened that may keep the prophecy from coming true. Some StarClan cats want to change these events and fix them to be the way they want. That would mean tearing apart and possibly hurting or killing innocent cats, both physically and emotionally." Squirrelflight gasped. "What do I have to do with all of this?" she demanded, her eyes blazing with fear. "How will my kits and I be hurt?" Spottedleaf padded forward and touched her muzzle to Squirrelflight's head. The ginger warrior was instantly transported out of the starry forest and into the ThunderClan nursery. A single kit lay in the middle of the nursery, completely still. It wasn't breathing. Squirrelflight gasped, but the image faded. Next, the ginger warrior watched herself being approached by Brambleclaw. When s he looked at his face, she found his mouth open in a snarl. The most frightening thing was the tom's eyes. They were unusually wide, and completely white. There was no trace of their usual amber color. Squirrelflight wanted to scream, but the image dissolved, and left her standing before her mangled and bloody body. Ashfur stood over her, his eyes wide in disbelief. His paws were stained with blood. The same blood that gushed from a deep wound on Squirrelflight's neck.

Chapter four coming soon! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CHAPTER 4 Squirrelflight woke with a start. She gasped, struggling to slow her heartbeat. The picture of Ashfur standing above her lifeless body stayed in her mind, a dreadful reminder of Spottedleaf's warning. "Ashfur would never do that!" she muttered to herself crossly. "I'd never do what?" Ashfur yawned, rolling over to face her. Squirrelflight looked at him in horror. "Oh, nothing," she said quickly. "I just had a dream, that's all." She hurried out of the den, looking over her shoulder to be sure her mate had not followed. "Squirrelflight?" The ginger she-cat jumped at the sound of her sister's voice. "Oh, hi Leafpool," Squirrelflight sighed, relaxing a little. "You seem... jumpy," Leafpool noted. She looked at her sister for a moment, wondering what exactly had happened. "I'm off to find some marigold," she went on casually. "Care to join me?" Squirrelflight shook her head. "No... I should, uh, go hunting." With that, the ginger warrior padded away. Leafpool gazed after her curiously. Whatever was bothering Squirrelflight must be a very serious matter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ashfur padded out of the warriors' den feeling heavy-hearted. Why had Squirrelflight been so quick to leave him? Didn't she love him? He felt like going back to sleep, but he knew he couldn't he padded miserably out of camp to go hunting, his tail dragging behind him. Ashfur's mind wasn't on his hunting. He let a mouse escape him even when he had it beneath his paws, and was distracted by a moth while stalking a squirrel and jumped too high. Finally realizing how hopeless this hunt was turning out to be, the gray warrior slowly walked back towards the camp. Then Ashfur noticed a sweet, familiar smell. Squirrelflight! He followed the scent through the forest, hoping to find his mate and get an explanation. To the tom's surprise, Squirrelflight's path headed straight for the Moonpool. He paused, wondering what business his mate could have with StarClan. The warrior pushed the thought away and continued on. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Squirrelflight leaped up the rocky slope leading to the moonpool. She knew only medecine cast were supposed to come here to share with their warrior ancestors, but the stubborn she-cat just had to speak with Spottedleaf again. She still had so many questions! the ginger warrior quickened her pace, anxious to reach the moonpool. Squirrelflight finally leaped into the clearing, proud she had made it here on her own. Then, she realized how mouse-brained this entire trip had been. Cats could only share with StarClan here at moonhigh. Now it was almost sunhigh! Squirrelflight groaned and began the descent back to the forest. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ashfur wandered through the forest, his mind racing. He could only imagine what his beloved mate could be doing right now. Had she fallen into the river? Had she tripped and sprained her paw? Or even worse... Was she meeting another tom? Ashfur cringed at that last thought. The image of Squirrelflight laying beside a WindClan tom made its way into the gray warrior's mind. He longed to yowl his loved one's name, to be certain that she was safe and alone. Yet, he held his breath and continued on. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A familiar scent wafted past Squirrelflight and she hesitated. "Ashfur?" she murmured. The gray warrior suddenly appeared next to her. He had a hopeful look on his face that masked how crushed he felt. Squirrelflight could still see his sadness displayed in his blue eyes. She sighed. "Ashfur..." she began. He shook his head at her. "Are you... meeting someone here?" he asked, his heart growing heavier with every passing second. He had noticed the fresh scent of WindClan. "No!" Squirrelflight exclaimed. "I would never even dream of..." She trailed off. Her mate gazed at her miserably, not listening or believing a single word. "If you didn't love me," he murmured "You could have said so." The gray tom padded away, his head and tail drooping.

CHAPTER 5 Brambleclaw watched with subtle satisfaction as Ashfur padded miserably into camp. Squirrelflight followed close behind, a mixture of confusion, sadness, and anger in her green eyes. That gray tom finally got what he deserved. Everything had been just fine between Squirrelflight and himself until that pile of fox dung had to jump into the picture. His hatred for the warrior burned inside him, a dark emotion Brambleclaw had never felt towards anyone. He longed to rake his claws through the tom's pale gray fur, to sink his teeth into his neck. Brambleclaw shook his head, confused. Was this the same emotion Tigerstar had felt when he murdered someone? The tom shivered at the thought of being anything like his father. He vowed not to let this feeling out, never to take it out on any living thing. Brambleclaw shivered again. He couldn't possibly be turning into his father. Could he? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Squirrelflight walked pointedly away from Ashfur and sat down beside the fresh kill pile. She began to groom herself fiercely, as if she could wash away the tension between them. Leafpool watched her sister worriedly. She could sense her sister's uncertainty. Squirrelflight didn't know how to feel, and Leafpool could tell. She padded quietly over and sat down beside the ginger she-cat. "What happened?" she whispered. Squirrelflight glared at her. "Please," Leafpool pleaded. "Tell me what's going on." Her sister paused and sighed deeply. "It's Ashfur," she breathed. "I was, erm, going to try to talk to StarClan by going to the moonpool, and he caught me and a WindClan patrol must have just passed because their scent was fresh and he thought I had been meeting someone else!" Squirrelflight gasped for breath. "He accused me of not loving him," she murmured sadly. Leafpool could tell her sister didn't know if Ashfur's accusation was true. "Do you love him?" she asked. She stared into Squirrelflight's eyes, knowing they would betray her if she was lying. "Of course I do!" Squirrelflight exclaimed. Leafpool gazed at her sister sternly. "At-at least I think I do..." the she-cat trailed off. "Oh Leafpool! I don't know what to do! One moment I'm sure we were meant for eachother, and the next we're falling apart!" Leafpool's gazed softened. "That is a decision only you can make," she mewed solemnly. "All I know is that if you and Ashfur don't work out together, there is always a backup plan." Squirrelflight looked at her sister, puzzled. "Backup plan...?" she said. Leafpool gestured with her tail to where Brambleclaw was sitting alone, eating a squirrel. "Brambleclaw!" Squirrelflight exclaimed, outraged. "But he helped Hawkfrost and...and..." She trailed off, realizing her feeling for the tom were not completely gone. Whenever she looked at him, she had felt a strange sensation she had taken as hatred. Now she realized, it was love. Leafpool smiled knowingly. "Just making a point, " she mewed, walking away. Squirrelflight continued to gaze at Brambleclaw. Did she really love him more than Ashfur? Memories flashed through her mind. Their journey to sun-drown place, pleasant evenings spent side by side, his hurt expression when she deserted him for Ashfur. How did she really feel? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Not a very long chapter, but it reveals hidden feelings between some important characters ^_^

Thanks Waterfall! Next chapter coming soon! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CHAPTER 6 Ashfur padded back into camp carrying a thrush. He dropped the prey on the fresh-kill pile and started toward the nursery. The tom seemed to think better of it, and went back to retrieve his thrush. Ashfur settled down nearby and began to eat. He began to think about the relationship between Squirrelflight and himself. Had she really been meeting another warrior that dreadful day? Or had he just been over reacting? Leafpool hurried across the clearing, a bundle of herbs in her jaws. Ashfur stared after her, realizing it must almost be time for Squirrelflight's kits to be born. It had been several moons since their fight, and they had not spoken since. The gray warrior thought about going to check on Squirrelflight, but once again stopped himself. She would just resent him even more if he did. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Squirrelflight quickly licked up the herbs her sister had brought her. The she-cat's entire body shook, and she gasped. The kits were coming. Only moments later, two kits lay next to their mother's side. Squirrelflight groomed them, her green eyes glowing with affection. The first kit was a pale gray she-kit with dark gray specks. Squirrelflight thought of how much it reminded her of Ashfur. "Hello Brindlekit," she mewed, resting her muzzle gently on the kit's head. Squirrelflight turned her gaze to the second kit. It was a ginger tom. He was laying terrifyingly still. "Flamekit," the she-cat mewed, desperately licking the kit's flank. He still did not move. Leafpool nudged the kit with her nose, sympathy clouding her amber eyes. "I'm sorry," she murmured. "Flamekit is dead." Squirrelflight could not hold back the sadness that welled up inside her. She let out a long wail of grief. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ashfur could not hold himself back anymore. He had heard Squirrelflight's cry, and needed to know that she and her kits were fine. The gray tom puched his way into the nursery. He gasped at the sight of a kit lying motionless on the nursery floor. "Is he..." Ashfur could not bring himself to finish the sentence. Leafpool nodded slowly. Squirrelflight wailed again, and the gray she-kit squeaked. Ashfur padded over to the Squirrelflight and looked down at the kit. She looked exactly like him. "They are my kits," he whispered, shock and realization hitting him all at once. "Oh Squirrelflight, I'm so sorry." He sat down beside his mate, gently licking her head. "I'm so sorry." Squirrelflight looked up at him, her green eyes filled with sadness. "Her name is Brindlekit," she murmured softly. Ashfur purred. she had kept her promise despite everything. He gazed at his mate and kit, overwhelmed by affection. Leafpool nudged a few more herbs toward Squirrelflight. "Eat these," she advised. "It should help with the shock and grief." The tabby she-cat nodded to Ashfur and backed out of the nursery, leaving them alone. "I really am sorry," Ashfur whispered. "I know," Squirrelflight murmured, licking the tom's ear. "I kept loving you, even after you accused me. I wondered when you would start to love me back again." Ashfur stared at the ground, embarrassed. "It's all my fault," he whispered, so quietly not even Squirrelflight could hear. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bluestar bristled, looking down at the two cats angrily. "After all this," she spat. "They still dare to call themselves mates?" Spottedleaf bowed her head. "I did all I could," she murmured. "It wasn't enough!" Bluestar hissed. "These two cats have doomed the four Clans! They shall all perish!" She stormed away, casting one last hateful glance down at Ashfur and Squirrelflight. Brindleface padded up to Spottedleaf. Flamekit trailed behind her. "I have never seen Bluestar so angry," the she-cat remarked. Spottedleaf shook her head sadly. "Nor have I," she murmured. "I only hope that we can fix this mess before Bluestar takes over the situation. If that happens, Squirrelflight, Ashfur, and Brindlekit will never know peace or happiness again." The toroiseshell she-cat padded sadly away. "Oh my son," Brindleface whispered. "What have you done?"

Thanks for the comments! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CHAPTER 7 Squirrelflight purred loudly as Ashfur padded into camp. She was sitting in the clearing at the very center of it all, watching Brindlekit chasing after the leaves that littered the ground. The tom brightened and dropped the squirrel he was carrying at her paws. "Ashfur!" Brindlekit squeaked, pouncing on her father's tail. He chuckled, turning to playfully nip at her small paws. The kit darted away, laughing. "It's about time you were made an apprentice," Ashfur mused. Brindlekit puffed out her chest proudly, and strutted across camp. Brambleclaw stumbled over the tiny she-kit and growled menacingly. Brindlekit scurried back to Squirrelflight, ducking down beside her mother. Ashfur glared at the tabby tom angrily, baring his teeth. "Ashfur, don't," Squirrelflight whispered, holding her mate back with her tail. Ashfur looked back at her. Was that concern in her green eyes? it must be something else, the tom decided. Brambleclaw snorted and padded away, his head and tail low. "Is the scary cat gone?" Brindlekit whispered, peeking over Squirrelflight's flank. The ginger she-cat purred in amusement and nodded. Brindlekit leaped over her mother and ran off to play again. "She really is something," Ashfur murmured. Squirrelflight nodded absently. "Anyways, I'm going to see Firestar about Brindlekit's apprentice ceremony." He brushed muzzles with his mate and hurried away. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Brambleclaw sulked, hidden in some bracken on the edge of camp. "Stupid little kit," he muttered. You only hate her because she's Ashfur's daughter, a voice in his head pointed out. Brambleclaw hissed at himself. "Brambleclaw?" a voice called quietly. A moment later, Whitepaw slipped into view. "Why are you hiding?" "I-er... Wanted to be alone," the tom replied, trying to avoid the apprentice's penetrating green eyes. "Oh," Whitepaw said. "Can I be alone with you?" Brambleclaw grunted in reply and the she-cat settled down beside him. Brambleclaw let his gaze stray to the white apprentice only once, and he found her looking up at him with admiration. The tabby grinned despite himself, somewhat glad for her company. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ashfur padded slowly into Firestar's den. The leader was contentedly sharing tongues with his mate, and both were purring loudly. The ginger tom looked up when he sensed someone approaching him. "Hello Ashfur," he mewed. "Can I help you?" "Actually, yes," the gray tom replied. "I wanted to talk to you about having Brindlekit made an apprentice." Firestar gazed at him for a moment. "She's already that old? Good StarClan, she's grown fast!" he murmured. "Yes, of course." the leader continued, speaking to Ashfur now. "Any suggestions of mentors?" Ashfur opened his mouth to speak, but quickly closed it again. "How about Brambleclaw?" Sandstorm yawned, stretching. Firestar nodded, clearly pleased by this idea. "Yes, Brambleclaw is a good warrior," the tom mewed. "And he hasn't had an apprentice yet." Ashfur felt fear growing inside him. He couldn't let that huge brute near Brindlekit! "What about..." the gray warrior desperately tried to think of another eligible mentor. "How about if you mentor her, Sandstorm?" The ginger she-cat shook her head. "No thanks," she mewed. "I might mentor one of Sorreltail's kits." Ashfur groaned inwardly. "Erm, okay, then how about Cloudtail? Or Rainwhisker or Sootfur or Spiderleg?" he went on, trying to keep his voice from displaying his emotions. "No," Firestar mewed firmly. "Brambleclaw will mentor Brindlekit. The ceremony will take place at sunhigh tomorrow." Ashfur dipped his head respectfully and backed out of the den. Fear shone in his deep blue eyes as he thought of what had happened to his mother. Tigerstar murdered Brindleface, he thought. I can't let Brambleclaw hurt Brindlekit! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Squirrelflight watched as Ashfur finally came back out of her father's den, a worried expression on his face. "What did he say?" the she-cat inquired as he padded up to her. "Well, Brindlekit will become an apprentice at sunhigh tomorrow," her mate replied. Squirrelflight could hear that he had to starin himself to sound cheerful. "Did he choose a mentor yet?" she peered at the gray warrior suspiciously, but he avoided her gaze. "Erm, no. He didn't," Ashfur lied. "And now he wants me to go hunting. So I'll see you later." The tom hurried out into the forest. Squirrelflight sighed, gazing after him sadly. What was he keeping a secret from her?
