[glow=red,2,300]LEGEND:[/glow]Title: The Dragon's Time
Long, long ago, at the beginning of time...
At that time, however, there was only a year in the Gap of the Celestial Awakening...the stars kindled and the planets spun. One year. The radiation was strong, crackling in furious waves and causing disrest to the planets and stars and bringing forth premature novas.
A particularly large star grew fiercely bright--the sign of a nova. The others looked on sadly, changing to stunned, as it burned a lithe, powerful line 'cross the sky. Forelegs stretched forward, and relaxed into a crouch. Haunches rippled with movement and where no legs had been before they crouched expectantly. Four wings--two large, two small, stretched and rolled experimentally, and a tail slashed forth, ended in an arrow-point.
Its eyes were curious, shimmering blue spheres flecked with light hazels and gold. It furled its wings and opened its maw. A lick of angry red flames shot forth and shaped the universe's second dragon on a promising planet.
Earth.

Gonfern lifted her head wearily. At last, her last egg lay nestled by the others in a sandy hollow she had dug. It had taken her three days to prepare. Now the Long Warming began. She would not leave her precious eggs unless Death took her by force. She rolled one into place by the others with her slender snout. Gently, she began to hum in Dragonsong. The eggs' shells rippled ever so slightly as the forming draclings listened, soothed.
"Saath fre nrezz, Sab tuvre narr, Kbret a kabrek, Mas satth bret fyre. Ab Gon't nayt Etm Gon't gon. Symbe mas satth bret fyre."
What was Gon? She wondered. Why did all fire dragon names begin with 'Gon'? She did not know, but did not care very much right now. Her mate, Gonreth, the mightiest dragon of her tribe, would come to her soon. He would not, could not, abandon her now. He would stand guard of this birthing cave until every last scale of their offspring were freed of their eggs.
She admired her eggs once more. They were all about the width of a good-sized tree stump, and about a foot high. The large ovals were perfectly smooth and polished-like. Their color was a milky ivory. Emeralds, reds, bronzes, silvers, golds, sapphires, and sunset pinks swirlked together in ridges and spirals across the surface. They imitated fire-opals. Gonfern curled around them, gentle but firm, and finally rested after her long, painful ordeal.

Ooc:// Thanks!
Gonreth finally came, some time when she was asleep. She woke to feel the cave radiating with pleasant heat from his inner fire, and sighed comfortably. "Welcome, Gonreth," she sighed contendedly. He looked briefly back and gave her a warm, gentle "smile". "I'm glad you are all right, my dracling," he replied, using the Lore term for "sweetheart". It always warmed Gonfern even futher when he expressed love for her.
"Did you see our clutch yet?" she asked.
"They are, by far, the most beautiful eggs lain all year," he answered solemnly. Gonfern knew he wasn't just saying this, it was the truth.
A horrible, ringing screech echoed from outside, and the pair lifted their necks, alert and overprotective. Fiercely, they began to hackle, Gonreth expanding his size to block the entryway to the birthing cave, Gonfern curled protectively around her eggs at an angle she could attack at.
There was a terrible, bloodcurdling scream--then Gonreth's mighty form simply fell away, limp, from the opening. Standing in the entryway was a Dark dragon, Gonspar. He smiled cruelly. "I told you I loved you, Gonfern," he said raspily. "That I could not bear to have you away. Then you flew off from my tribe and then I--" He indicated Gonreth's body below the high-up cave, "--Then I see you have paired with the most powerful drac in the land at this time. And my archenemy."
"Go, Gonspar," growled Gonfern fiercely.
"I will, my dear dracling--" Gonfern shivered at this use of Gonreth's name for her--"But I want to see the eggs that could have been mine, first."
"NEVER," snarled Gonfern warningly, but he paid no heed to this. A single roar, across her mental focus, was sent out--then she magicked herself away to the Draecan tribe that worshiped her. Gonspar cursed in dragontongue, and set out to find his lost love once more, scornfully flying over Gonreth. ~~~~~~~~~ Gaen woke, startled, that morning. Shaking, a tear trickling down her cheek, but she did not know why. What woke her, so early? She quickly dressed, said a prayer to Gon, walked outside.
Almost immediately she felt a pounding pulse reach her Focus. Startled, it took her a second to dominate thought over the sensation, and began to read an echoing roar. Dragontongue.
<Help me,> it repeated frantically. <Gonfern asks. Help me.>
Gonfern? The one hind-dragon her tribe revered? Stunned, she began to follow the roaring thrum until it pounded inside her mind so terribly she thought she could walk no further without dying. <Will you be quiet!> she yelped. <You're hurting me!>
As the fierce waves of pain recceded, she realized what she'd done. I yelled at a DRAGON, she realized with sinking regret. <Are...are you Gonfern?> she asked slowly.
Silence, then a sharp jab as a reply formed. <I am the dragonet Gonfern. I have fled with my eggs--away from death by another.>
Gaen felt her pain and fury merging in a wave, and called it off politely. <If you would be so kind,> she asked after this was done, <could you direct me in your direction?>
<In a small den behind those reeds,> replied Gonfern. <Please hurry, dragonchild.>
With a gulp of fear and exhileration, Gaen pushed aside the reeds.

Gonfern lay weakly, her neck limp against the ground, her scaled flanks heaving. She was extremely weak, having spended her magic on transporting herself and her clutch. Now the first pain of loosing her mate began to sink in. "Gonreth," she murmured weakly, and roared with all of her fury, all of her anguish. Then she began to send out a steady cry, a plea for help. <Help me. Gonfern asks. Help me.>
She could feel as one of the dragonpeople woke to her calls. Finally, she relaxed all the way and curled around her clutch. Opening her Focus to the one girl that had woken, she listened intently.
The girl was peppery and fierce, with determination she admired. But of course, she was humbled by the idea SHE, a lowly draeca, was in the presence of The Gonfern. She snorted a ring of smoke, amused. Slowly, the reeds were pushed back.
Without looking at the girl, she told her, <I am ill. You heard my cry. You are far more than the quarterblood draeca they believe you to be. Your dragonsblood is strong--you, perhaps, are dragonblood throughout.>
She was badly startled by this suggestion, but pulled herself up and replied, <I thank you for your kindness, my Lady, but it is far too great of an idea you have of me.> She bowed, still in awe.
Gonfern raised her head and stared fiercely at the girl. <LISTEN!> she stormed, a raging gong in the girl's mind. <You are foolish to deny the word of a dragon. I am young, but not a fool. Not like Gonspar...> and the pain returned.
Obviously, the girl felt it, and rushed to her side. Hesitating only momentarily, she rested her hand on Gonfern's side and closed her eyes.
At first, Gonfern felt annoyance that a girl would dare touch her--a dragon! But then she realised this was a gesture of kindness. She began to admit a purring sound through their Focus. The girl closed her eyes, bringing up Gonfern's energies to her surface, and then exhaled. Gonfern's energy and life force mingled with the girl's, and began to pull it back in.
Gonfern then realised what the girl was trying to do. She thrashed once, breaking her concentration, and their twined energy returned to its rightful body.
<Do you mind? I'm trying to save your life--> the girl began, and stopped, frightened. <I am most sorry, my Lady...>
<Do not be sorry, just ashamed. You have a wonderful, spirited life, and you will NOT give it to me. You will not die for me.>
<Oh, but I would!> cried the girl. <If it meant I could return your spent strength, I would give you my life force!>
<Nonsense> Gonfern spat. <I will not allow this--I can regain my energy in a day or so. Instead, you will hunt for me. However> she commented, her voice softening considerably, <You offered your life for mine. I am flattered, and I will Favor you for this.>
<No!> the girl cried, aloud and mentally. It was actually loud enough in the dragonet's mind that Gonfern didn't strain to hear it. <You are a dragon. I am a draeca. I need no gifts from the Great Drac such as yourself. It would be an honor to provide you with meat.>
She turned to leave when Gonfern snaked her tail around to bar her way. <I have one more question, dragonchild. What is your name?>
<I am Gaen> she replied quietly, and Gonfern let her go.

I think this is getting boring...any ideas???
Gaen stood stock-still by the water's edge, careful to not let the shadow of her spear fall on the water. Not a single breath rippled the waters. As the sun began its painfully slow climb into the sky, she felt awake, refreshed with energy. Her Focus warmed and expanded in a great length she couldn't have imagined before. Every bird, bat and moth within the area was visible to her--they were drac, such as herself. In the old Lore, it mean 'winged/flight'. It didn't just appeal to dragons.
It must have been Gonfern, she realized. My contact with her has increased my powers--though what the sun has anything to do with it, I don't know. She shifted her postition and focused on the waters below her. A single flash of silver gleamed in the rising sunlight, and in an instant it lay, thrashing madly, on the point of her spear. Barely a whisper of a ripple disturbed the lake's calm surface.
Gaen continued to fish this way for a while until she had gathered around thirty. She was extremely good at every kind of hunting.
She whipped fronds together until they became limber and wove them together without any difficulty. Carrying her bundle of fish back to where Gonfern had holed herself away, she carefully dropped it on the floor in front of the dragoness.
<My lady> she murmured, and backed away with a bow. Gonfern lifted her neck gracefully and turned her wide amethyst eyes on the girl. Blinking gently, she inclined her head in thanks, then slit Gaen's packaging. She feasted with relish and sighed as the last silver body disappeared down her throat. Swiping her tongue around her teeth, Gonfern finally spoke.
<I thank you, dragonchild. You are an exellent huntress--you had barely been gone for sixty heartbeats.> Of course, Gaen realised, dragon heartbeats were slower and more powerful than her own, and had less of them in a day. It could have been a compliment, however, and she bowed politely.
<My thanks, dragoness Lady. Do you require any more service?>
<Do not be so formal with me, dear,> Gonfern said in a motherly tone, surprising Gaen. She eyed her large eggs carefully and regarded the dragoness in a new respect.
<You must be so proud to be hatching your babies> Gaen said wistfully. <I wish I had something to be proud of, something people would think impressive.>
A growl rumbled in Gonfern's chest. <Nonsense, Gaen! You have hunted and even tried to give up your life for me! A dragon! Most would have fled or died on the spot. I am proud of you, and that is far more than you might have asked. But, however, I must ask a favor of you nonetheless-->
Gaen nodded. It would be a pleasure.
<I need some of your energy. NOT ALL! But to conceal myself against your people, I must gain some quick energy--that way, they will not hear my Focus.>
<Of course my lady. If you do not mind my asking, however, why is it you want to become hidden against this Tribe? They...they'd love to be near you, to see you are real...>
Gonfern snorted. <Of course I will reveal myself to them eventually. But for now, they will NOT disrupt my birthing cycle. Even if Gonreth is not with me...> She broke off, then shakily continued, <Of course, you will come see me regularly, and watch over my eggs when I regain my strength.>
Overjoyed at this opportunity, Gaen jumped to her feet and hugged Gonfern's neck fiercely. Suddenly she fell away, horrified at herself. Instead, Gonfern laughed, growling throatily. <My dear girl, I am honored you think so highly of this task. Visit me tomorrow before dawn. Good day, Gaen.> With that, she rested her neck across her paws and curled up gently around her clutch to warm them with the fire in her belly. Her wings shook themselves out and settled comfortably across her back.
<Yes my lady> Gaen said gently, and left her.

Your story is so awesome Ice Queen! It rock my socks! Maybe you could start another POV [point of view] on another dragon character. And could you please list the 'dragon' terms?

Gaen woke early the next morning. She was still tired from giving Gonfern a sampling of her energy, but felt it was worth it entirely. She dressed quickly while still in her bedroll, then stood without much noise.
Gaen looked around. To her left, in similar bedrolls, slept her mother and grandmother contentedly. On her right and closest to the door-flap of her Den was her father, elder brother, uncle, and grandfather, the so-called "Men" of the Tribe. Honestly, if they could see what she was trusted with now, perhaps they wouldn't act so high and mighty and shame her in front of others.
Secretly, she harbored the hope Gonfern would take her on as a nursemaid when the dragon kits hatched. Perhaps she could go back with the mysterious dragoness and never have to see this sorry Tribe again.
For in reality, Gaen was the outcast. She didn't enjoy life here. All the boys and men of the Tribe were jealous of her skill at archery, fishing, hunting, tracking, and fire-magic, and did their best to make her life miserable. Of course, when her grandmother and mother stood up for her, they were scorned as well.
Gaen took a loaf of bread from the chill-box, a small chest where meats waiting to be cured were kept. She had slipped the loaf inside after its baking last night, secretly, so she could enjoy it in the morning on her way to check on Gonfern.
Munching on the cold, chewy bread, Gaen carefully left the Tribe's camp, making sure she was not followed and left no signs of her presence there. She traveled quickly and quietly, and was at the reeds protecting Gonfern's presence in no time at all.
She entered quietly. Gaen felt the dragoness's Focus sharpen and scan hers swiftly. Then Gonfern lifted her head and thrummed, <Welcome, Gaen.>
<I am honored you remember my name, my Lady.>
Gonfern snorted again, and Gaen jumped. Foolishly, she realized, the dragoness had been laughing at her.
<My dear, I will never forget your name. When I reach my five hundreth century, your name will not have eradicated itself from my mind. You are Favored by me and my kind. Do not forget me, Gaen, and I will never forget you.>
Gaen blinked back the sting of tears. <Yes, my Lady.>
<I would be honored if you should call me Gonfern. It is, after all, my name.> Gaen detected a hint of a smile with the words.
<...Yes, my la- Yes, Gonfern> she said, stumbling on her name.
<Let us have no fear of each other> the dragoness proposed graciously, and Gaen bowed. <Child, answer me truthfully. Do you fear me?>
What a strange question, Gaen thought. Thinking for a moment, she replied, <In all respect, Gonfern, I do not fear you. I respect you, and I hesitate to answer you, because of our power differences. But I do not fear you in the slightest. I am fully aware that if you intended to kill me, you would have done so.>
Warmth blossomed inside her Focus as Gonfern's purring became louder. <I am satisfied my decision is wise> the dragoness told her. Before Gaen could mull this over, she growled good-naturedly, <Well? I'm not going to wait for my meal forever!>
Gaen bowed, grinning, and ran to the lake.

Are you kidding? You're like a god at writing them!!!!!
I've been following your story, just haven't been posting. IT"S SO FREAKING GOOD!
-Back to Gonspar- hehe, I love villains.
Gonspar snarled, a fierce rumbling that started in his belly and shook the mountains around him. He had been flying for days without nourishment...he was desperate to find Gonfern. He needed to. She was so beautiful, so strong. He could not live if life was without her.
Those eggs should have been his. What did Gonreth have that he didn't? It took little effort to kill that overblown pest. Still, Gonfern held no admiration for him. Still, she eluded his search. Still, he was without the mate he truly desired.
When I find her, he decided nastily, I will eat her eggs or kits, whichever I find. Knowing her, she will have concealed herself from the outside world, to raise her kits in peace. She will have no powerful Favors. She will be helpless to stop my killing. With nothing left, she WILL turn to me.
He gave a sick-looking smile and circled again.
~~~
Miles away, Gonfern woke from her dozing with a start and gave an uneasy growl. Something was lurking, searching for her Focus. She shielded it fiercely and almost fainted from the effort--she wished her draeca-child would hurry up. She'd feel safer then.
Shorter than usual, but I have to go. Everyone should go ridicule my manga, "Kagura", too. Ciao
